Happy Mother’s Day!
This year, I asked for nothing. No flowers, no cake with dramatic candles, no surprise gifts. I simply announced to my husband and children, very calmly and very firmly: today, I am on leave from being a mother. Full holiday. Zero duties.
Which meant no cooking, no dishwashing, no laundry sorting, no reminding anyone of anything. And to my surprise, they took it seriously. Like… seriously seriously.
The kitchen was fully taken over. Meals were planned, cooked, and served. The laundry from the service? Sorted and packed for our upcoming road trip. They even tidied up before the Ranger Clean Sheet team arrived, so the ranger could handle the things they couldn’t or simply didn’t want to do. Teamwork, delegation, project management. I was impressed.
My husband, who once treated dishwashing like a personal enemy, suddenly became the most diligent man in the room. Yes, we have a dishwasher. Yes, he still washed all the big pots and pans by hand. With commitment. With purpose. Growth is real.
As if that wasn’t enough, my eldest gave me a special treatment: she dyed my hair roots. At home. Budget version. Hair dye bought at Lawson for a few tens of thousands. Very humble. Very effective. Considering a salon would charge me 300 to 500 thousand just to cover stubborn grey roots, this felt like a small but powerful victory. Motherhood math at its finest.
After washed my hair and took a bath, we team up as family to brainstorm and proofread our eldest's personal statement to her dream university. Oh how I love this family teamwork and support each other.
Dinner was Swedish meatballs, courtesy of IKEA’s frozen section, cooked lovingly by my kids. Honestly? Delicious. Comfort food hits differently when you’re not the one standing in the kitchen.
The day kept giving. Hampers arrived. One from Harvest, sent by Bromen, Mas Rijal, and Mba Ika. Another from Chilace, from Petra Barus and Vidya. Perfect timing, too. Instant road trip supplies. Thank you so much!
At night, we squeezed in one episode of Emily in Rome. Cheesy? Yes. Eye candy? Also yes. Exactly what the brain needs after a very full, very sweet day. We watched while snacking on tape singkong from my sister in Java. Soft, sweet, nostalgic. The kind of snack that makes you eat slowly without realizing you’re already full.
And honestly, that might be the best gift of all.
