A quick log of yesterday before the details fade: a beautiful Sunday packed with family time, good food, and a very unfortunate ending.
Morning Walk & The Hunt for Sourdough
Bright and early at 8:00 AM, my husband, our youngest daughter, and I headed out to Taman Asri and Taman Alang-Alang, located right on the border of Jakarta and Depok. My big sister met up with us there, having walked all the way from her home nearby.
You know how when we travel abroad, we always get a bit envious of how well-maintained their public parks are; complete with outdoor fitness gear and lush greenery? Well, I realized yesterday that we actually have that here too! The outdoor gym facilities at the park were in super good shape, well-maintained, and ready to use. Props to the local council for keeping it clean and functional!
At around 9:00 AM, we made our way back to my sister’s house. But of course, we had to make a pitstop first! We stopped by a cute home-based bakery right on the hook near her complex gate to pick up some viral sourdough. It’s run by a super friendly family, and the setup is so aesthetic.
Breakfast Spreads & A $90 Brownie Slice
When we arrived at my sister’s house, an incredible breakfast spread was waiting for us:
Me: A cozy bowl of savory chicken porridge (bubur gurih).
Hubby & Youngest: Classic Nasi Uduk with beef semur.
There was also nasi ulam, stir-fried salted squid (cumi asin), sweet corn porridge, and the unmistakably fragrant semur jengkol! (Yes, I couldn't resist taking a bite, haha!).
About an hour later, my little sister arrived with her husband and their little girl! Fun fact: my big sis and lil sis actually share the exact same birthday!
We held off on blowing out the candles just yet because we were waiting for my parents-in-law and our eldest daughter to join us. While waiting, I set up the star of the dessert table: the legendary Brownies Sultan @omalexy by @amrazing! If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you might remember me talking about this infamous pan of brownies that costs IDR 1.4 million (~$90 USD), which boils down to about IDR 100k per slice! 😂
Double Birthday Blowout & Closet Purging!
An hour later, my parents in law with my eldest daughter arrived bearing another birthday cake!
We set up both cakes side by side. The vibe was immaculate:
My youngest daughter put Jamrud’s iconic Selamat Ulang Tahun song on blast.
My eldest daughter was on video duty with my phone (she prefers staying behind the camera!).
My husband’s phone was set up on a video call with my mom back home in Bangka Island so she wouldn't miss out on celebrating her two daughters.
After the candle-blowing ceremony, my mom shared a sweet message and prayer over the call. Then came gift time! I got both my sisters matching gifts: breathable sport hijabs and cooling undershirts (manset) from Decathlon. (Fun fact: I bought them literally 30 minutes before the mall closed the night before. The perks of living right above the mall 😆).
After gifts, we hung out, caught up, and I giveaway a big bag of jackets and pashminas to hand out to everyone. Gotta downsize that apartment closet inventory whenever possible!
Next Stop: Church & Deep Thoughts
By 12:30 PM, it was time to wrap things up:
My sister and her eldest daughter were off to a Korean band concert.
My in-laws and my eldest daughter headed home (they attended church in the morning).
My little sister’s family headed back to their place.
And my husband, youngest daughter, and I rushed to church for our 2:00 PM service.
We arrived at the mall where our church is located just before 2:00 PM and quickly grabbed a coffee so we wouldn't nod off during the sermon.
This week’s sermon was a continuation of our series on Resilience, specifically focusing on social crisis. The pastor talked about how so many people experience deep loneliness even in the middle of a crowd, and how common it is to feel lonely inside a marriage. It really hit home and gave us a lot to reflect on.
Bakso Titoti & A Searing Hot Feast
Church ended before 4:00 PM. We were starving, so we stopped by Bakso Titoti Wonogiri (Pasar Minggu branch). I’ve eaten at their original branch in Wonogiri before, but never at this location.
Whew, it was HOT! It’s a semi-outdoor setup with no AC (just ceiling fans) and the heat gets trapped by the aluminum roof and all the steaming carts surrounding the dining area. We were sweating bullets, so we couldn't stay too long!
But the food? 10/10 delicious. Just as good as the Wonogiri original!
A complete bowl costs IDR 35,000 (~$2.20) and comes loaded with 1 big minced meat ball, 1 big egg-filled meatball, 3 small tendon meatballs, yellow & white noodles, and beef tripe (babat). My daughter loved it so much she asked to buy raw ones to bring home. (Turns out eating in is way cheaper because raw meatballs cost IDR 15k for big ones and IDR 5k for small ones! I bought 20 small ones to take home). Paired it with a fresh avocado juice and avocado shaved ice, total damage was just IDR 129,000 for all three of us (excluding the takeaways).
The Unfortunate Plot Twist
We finally made it home! My original Sunday evening plan was simple: hit the gym, followed by a relaxing dip in the jacuzzi.
Fate had other plans... I got severe diarrhea! 😭
I honestly don't know who the culprit was, probably just overeating throughout the day! My main suspects are either the chili sambal from my morning porridge or that single piece of semur jengkol I tried. I don't think it was the bakso because my husband and daughter ate the exact same thing (and I didn't add sambal to mine) and they were completely fine.
Luckily, my youngest daughter has a total nurse spirit! She took such good care of me: grabbing my meds and bringing me water while my husband was deeply immersed in his coding session.
I took my meds and knocked out early... sleeping all the way until this morning. 😴
All in all, despite the chaotic end to the evening, it was a Sunday well spent filled with family, warmth, and good food.
With love, Nuniek
