How are you, my geek widow?

For context, a “geek widow” is a married woman who feels functionally single at night because her husband is off “dating” his computer screen until 3 AM, lost in a world of coding.
In response, I proudly pulled up my phone to show him my sleep statistics from last night. I had achieved a gloriously high sleep score with zero wake-ups! The secret? We didn't sleep in the same bed. We have an unwritten rule: if I’m already fast asleep and he’s still coding late into the night, he doesn't come upstairs; he sleeps on the mattress below so he won't disturb me.
Not to be outdone, he pulled up his own stats. Sky-high deep sleep, practically zero awake time; a typical night for him. He is a naturally heavy sleeper, and honestly, I envy him. He won't wake up even there's loud noise, I have to touch him directly to wake him up. But then came the unwanted advice: he started listing off his usual sleep tips and habits, implying that if I just adopted his routines and changed my mindset, I’d sleep just as deeply.
I stopped him right there. It’s really not that simple.
Our baseline biologies are fundamentally different. He’s a heavy sleeper by nature; I’m a classic light sleeper. For me to reach deep sleep, I have to work extra hard to control my environment, which includes eliminating any potential noise or movement. He claimed it was a matter of habit and mindset, but I felt deep down that it was hardwired.
So, naturally, I went down a science rabbit hole to find the truth.
Turns out, science completely has my back.
First of all, sleep depth isn’t something you can control with sheer will or motivation. It’s decided for you by a mix of physical factors that influence how your brain protects the integrity of your sleep
The secret weapon of heavy sleepers actually comes down to something called sleep spindles: bursts of high-frequency brain waves generated by the thalamus, the part of the brain that relays sensory information. As Dr. Jeffrey Ellenbogen, chief of sleep medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, explained: "The more sleep spindles your brain produces, the more likely you'll stay asleep, even when confronted by noise"

We live in a self-help culture that loves to claim everything can be fixed if you just change your mindset, build better habits, or try harder. But this lunch debate was a great reminder that not everything is a matter of willpower. So much of how we function is dictated by biological, neurological, and genetic factors that don't care about our tips and tricks.
If you're a light sleeper like me, stop blaming yourself or feeling like you're failing at sleep hygiene. Your brain is just built a little differently, and accepting your biology (and setting strict bedroom rules with your night-owl partner) is the real key to getting a good night's rest!
